MEMOLIA

A fun way to learn languages and sharpen your memory

Memolia is a game designed to help users learn languages and keep their memory active through an interactive memory game. The game is based on a simple but effective gameplay mechanic where the user matches cards with words and images, while also offering an opportunity to train both memory and language skills.

Project Overview

My main goal with this project was to develop an educational game that combines learning with play while also learning JavaScript. Through this project, I explored the entire process end-to-end: from research and concept development to prototyping, testing, and building a functional product.

Process & Methods

I started by researching and analyzing similar games to understand what makes them engaging and effective.

Wireframes and prototypes were crafted in Figma to map out the user experience.

Explored various design styles throughout the project, creating custom backgrounds and illustrations in Illustrator, and initially designing some memory card images. Due to time constraints, I used icon libraries for the memory card images during this stage.

Development involved coding with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and JSON, with a focus on functionality, while also exploring possibilities in Spline.

Used GitHub for version control, exploring collaboration techniques to maintain an efficient and organized workflow.

Accessibility was ensured by adhering to WCAG guidelines.

Through iterative usability testing, I refined the game's functionality, making it more engaging and accessible.

Investigated tools like icon libraries and AI tools such as ChatGPT and text-to-talk for generating audio, sparking ideas and solving challenges creatively.

Results & Conclusions

The game is currently in the prototype phase, with significant potential for further development. Throughout the project, I gained valuable experience in JavaScript, Git, prototyping, user testing and translating Figma designs into functional code. Future iterations could focus on refining functionality, adding more languages and learning features and exploring new ways to combine pedagogy and technology to create an even more engaging experience.
