An AI solution for equality

What is diversity plugin?

Diversity is a design solution for a web browser plugin that aims to educate AI about diversity during searches, with the goal of presenting a broader spectrum of search results.

WHY DIVERSITY?
Why is diversity important?
When using search engines, many browsers employ cookies and AI technologies to quickly provide content that aligns with our specific interests. While this can be helpful, there is a risk of falling into repetitive patterns and receiving more of the same.
Monoculture
It could lead to a narrower worldview, where we encounter fewer diverse perspectives. Unintentionally we might contribute to the development of a monoculture, where diversity is diminished or goes unnoticed.
Struggle for Acceptance

In such patterns, we may become solely focused on seeking self confirmation and avoid thinking differently or standing out. But what happens if we don't fit the norm or fail to meet our goals? Will we be capable of accepting ourselves or others who don't comply? This could result in feelings of emptiness and disdain towards ourselves and others.

Belonging
True value in life often stems from having a context where you can be accepted for who you truly are, where respect is shown, and where you have the opportunity to share experiences and feel a sense of belonging in this world.
Power of Differences

People with different background and perspectives compared to yourself, can enrich your life in a way that confirmation can not. Having access to a broader range of ideas, insights, and solutions lead to more effective problem-solving and decision-making. It can make you smarter, challenge you to reflect more and show yourself that your differences can be a strength.

CONTEXT & OPENAI

Global impact, digital design and equality

The project aligns with one of the goals in the UN Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, subgoal 5.B: Empower women through technology. How can we promote the use of technology, particularly information and communication technology, to enhance women's empowerment?

How can I contribute to this topic as a digital designer?
How can we efficiently reach a substantial global audience? What are the prevalent tools currently in use? To what extent do these tools reflect the principles of equality? What impact do these tools have on individuals and society? Are there opportunities for enhancing these tools?

Hi OpenAI!

What top four techniques can help AI models promote equality?

  • Bias correction: Identifying and correcting biases in training data to create fair AI models.
  • Diverse training data: Using varied data to avoid bias and promote diversity in AI models.
  • Fairness-aware Machine Learning (FAML): Developing AI models that consider factors like gender, age, and ethnicity for fairness.

  • Active collection of diversified training data: Actively collecting diverse data to avoid bias and promote diversity.
Other techniques that are also relevant for a browser plugin utilizing AI to promote equality

Transparent model development, reliable data usage, education and awareness, algorithmic auditing, user feedback, collaboration, responsible data practices, regular model evaluation, ethical guidelines, inclusion of ethical and social knowledge, stakeholder involvement and cultural sensitivity.

Which AI model is being trained when using Google's image search?

One of the most important AI techniques used in Google Image Search is Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). CNN is a deep learning algorithm designed to detect patterns in image data and has proven to be highly effective for image recognition. When a user performs an image search, Google uses CNN to analyze the image information and then find similar images in its database.
Are there any disadvantages of CNN?
Risks to privacy and confidentiality as personal information may be present in the images used for training. Images used for training and improving AI models may contain personal information. AI models are not perfect and can sometimes produce results that are not entirely accurate or relevant. AI models can reinforce existing social or cultural biases if trained on biased data or used in a way that does not consider important ethical and fairness considerations.

Exploring 3 search engines

GOOGLE
A leading technology giant, is committed to increase diversity and fairness in its products and services, including search engines and AI driven applications.
BING
Microsoft s search engine, actively works to reduce bias in search results and increasing diversity in training data to improve the representation of minorities in its models.
DUCKDUCKGO
A search engine with a strong focus on user privacy. Unlike Google, it does not offer personalized search results. It does not profile its users based on their search patterns, ensuring that everyone receives the same search results regardless of previous searches or history.
REALITY CHECK

Image search - An effective and easy
tool

The inquiries led me to examine web browsers, considering their widespread use as a daily tool. During my research on search engines, AI, and equality, I became particularly intrigued by the image search feature. Images serve as a highly effective medium of communication. What we see greatly influences our perception and speaks volumes about who is considered deserving of visibility in this world. However, who is truly being represented, and what are the reasons behind it? Does it align with reality and reflect equality?
